Regrets collect like old friends
Here to relive your darkest moments
I can see no way, I can see no way
And all of the ghouls come out to play
And every demon wants his pound of flesh
But I like to keep some things to myself
I like to keep my issues strong
It's always darkest before the dawn
And I've been a fool and I've been blind
I can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
I'm always dragging that horse around
Our love is questioned, such a mournful sound
Tonight I'm gonna bury that horse in the ground
So I like to keep my issues strong
But it's always darkest before the dawn
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh whoa
And I am done with my graceless heart
So tonight I'm gonna cut it out and then restart
'Cause I like to keep my issues strong
It's always darkest before the dawn
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh whoa
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
And given half the chance would I take any of it back
It's a fine romance but it's left me so undone
It's always darkest before the dawn
Oh whoa, oh whoa...
And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't
So here's to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope
It's a shot in the dark aimed right at my throat
'Cause looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Well what the hell I'm gonna let it happen to me, yeah
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa

I really do love this song too! It is also refreshing for a woman to refer to a man as a devil after listening to how often women are referred to as evil supernatural beings in this class. It's cool that she uses this allegory relating whatever man was holding her back as a devil that she just has to shake off of her back.

DeleteThe line "And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't" caught my eye because it reminded me of how the prosecution process of actual witches went. I doubt if this is what the band intended but i found it an interesting connection.

I agree with Lacy that the idea that the line "And I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't" is relevant to the witchcraft trials and that no matter whether they confessed to being a witch or denied being a witch they could be executed or receive other forms of punishment. There was no winning in those situations when people were accused of being witches. I'm surprised that it took so many years for the process to fade away because it seems like common sense that this processed is flawed in that no matter what the accused confesses or doesn't confess they are most likely going to be executed. Especially since so many common occurrences were mistaken for witchcraft and no real evidence was ever provided.

While I've heard this song before, I never paid much attention to the lyrics before now. But after reading through them I can see many parallels between this and witchcraft trials. One line that particularly stuck out to me is the repetition of "its always darkest before the dawn." To me this seems very relevant to the feelings of many accused witches as they were being tortured or even put to death. To many, I'm sure it was clear that regardless of their innocence, they were going to be put to death anyways. For a religious person, they would likely see the last hours of their torture and pain as the "darkness" before they ascend to heaven, the "dawn." This also goes along with the line "I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope." Both of these I think follow closely with the idea of having hope and faith in God until the last moments of life, regardless of the pain the person is going through.

This video shows such a range of emotions. It displays hope, courage, despair, and lessons learned, and the girl dancing does a fantastic job of showing this. More class related - I can definitely see Dr. Green playing this song, because these emotions can also be displayed in an individual accused of witchcraft. Hope (I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope), courage (So i like to keep my issues strong), despair (And I've been a fool and I've been blind) and lessons learned (I can never leave the past behind). Take an innocent little girl: Joan of Arc for example accused of a crime she did not do, and these emotions very well could have been seen in her.

I agree with the mass range of emotions shown in the video. To me, it tells a story along the lines of the struggle this women went through, just as the struggles we have learned about throughout the whole course this quarter. Her shaking the devil off her back reminded me of how the many prosecutions of innocent women who were not witches but were accused with so much torture, it is as if during this struggle they are trying to shake off the devil.
